The I-85/385 Gateway Project is expected to transform the Upstate’s driving experience, as it includes much-needed additions to the overall regional transit structure. Photo provided.

An exit connecting Interstate 85 southbound to Woodruff Road and Interstate 385 southbound will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday, May 3 until 6 a.m. Monday, May 6.

Traffic on I-85 south trying to connect to Woodruff Road or I-385 south will be detoured at Exit 51C to I-385 north and then directed to Exit 37 on Roper Mountain Road where drivers will turn left and can proceed to Woodruff Road or I-385 south.

The closure is a result of continued work on the I-85/I-385 Gateway Project, which will add lanes on both interstates as well as 12 interchange bridges. The project is expected to be complete by next year.

This weekend’s detour will allow drainage and asphalt paving around the closed exit.
