Thyme and Play

Last year I e-met Eva and Henry Vega when they were publicizing their dining and inclusivity initiative they’ve named Thyme and Play. They shared their story and allowed our photographer into their home to document the “Una Noche de Chocolate” dinner they served to several parents while also providing onsite, expert childcare for the special needs children in attendance. A few weeks ago, I was able to meet them at a reprise of the chocolate-themed dinner and see how the entire process works. In short, this couple of culinary grads, vets, and parents of a son who is autistic is truly heroic for their efforts to help parents in desperate need of a night out but who aren’t able to do that because of their children’s care needs.

After a few pop-ups where the adults are served a three-or-four-course, chef-prepared dinner, and the children are cared for by occupational therapists and other childcare workers, Thyme and Play has now received its non-profit status. With that in hand, they will be hosting pop-ups more frequently, as well as working towards the brick-and-mortar location they dream of opening so that families with such needs have a safe place every day, not just on special occasions.

Graze & Nibble

So the name is funny, but the food is serious. Now through the end of March, The Lazy Goat is hosting Tapas Tuesdays, 5-9 p.m., wherein diners purchase three items from the “Graze & Nibble” section of the menu and get one free. Score.

Menu items will include the never-can-get-enough fried goat cheese, brussels sprouts, grilled octopus, patatas bravas, Moroccan lamb, risotto, fresh pasta, and additional vegetarian options. Prices listed range from $7-14 roughly, so do the math, take a couple friends, and enjoy a deal of a meal, even if you’re on a budget.

C-S-A! C-S-A!

The abbreviation for Community Supported Agriculture sounds like a sporting event chant (to me). While having nothing to do with games of any sort, CSA’s are definitely worth celebrating. The newest one in the Greenville area is a partnership with Horseshoe Farm and The Anchorage called Farm Share, a new spin on the traditional CSA model.

Here’s how it works: Customers will receive a weekly bag of vegetables for a membership fee like a typical CSA but will now be able to add on multiple options from local purveyors and partners. Wine and prepared items will be available from The Anchorage, as well as cheese from Blue Ridge Creamery, and chocolate from La Rue Fine Chocolates.

Each week the bag will include notes from the farmer and chef on the vegetables included, how to prepare them (what do you do with eight pounds of rainbow chard??), and suggestions for dishes based around the entirety of the package. Supplements will also include notes and more information on their partners.

The initial membership is now open for purchase and will last 10 weeks with the first pick up starting on March 13. Bags appropriately sized for families of two or four will be available in the initial offering. Weekly pickups will be available Wednesday afternoons at The Anchorage, 586 Perry Ave., between noon and 6 p.m. Orders can be placed at horseshoefarmsc.com.
