Greenville County Schools cancels weekend events

Greenville County Schools announced it has canceled all weekend events as the coast of North Carolina started feeling the effects of Hurricane Florence on Thursday.

The district said all schools will still have classes Friday, but school and athletic events must conclude by 7 p.m. on Friday, according to a released statement from the district.

“State regulations prohibit the operation of school buses with 30mph sustained winds and/or 45mph gusting winds,” the statement said. “We will be monitoring wind speed and could make adjustments to this schedule.”

As of 4:40 p.m. Thursday, Hurricane Florence was a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour. The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings for life-threatening storm surges and the possibility of “catastrophic” flooding across the Carolinas.
