Greenville County Schools announced Wednesday afternoon that all varsity athletic events, both inside and outside of the district, will be held Thursday because of predicted tropical storm-force winds associated with Hurricane Florence.
The district said preferred starting time for the Thursday athletic contests will be 6:30 p.m., but no later than 7 p.m.
All sub-varsity events will be canceled or played Wednesday night.
After-school and evening events planned for Friday will be permitted but must conclude by 7 p.m.
GCS spokeswoman Beth Brotherton said in an email the decisions were based on the National Weather Service update that predicts that strong winds would not arrive in the Upstate until 8 p.m. Friday. State law prevents the operation of school buses when there are sustained winds of 30 mph or gusting winds of 45 mph.
As of Wednesday, the district sees nothing in the forecast that would cause cancelation of school on Thursday or Friday, Brotherton said.
