Graham, McCain condemn Trump’s immigration ban, prez reponds

Upstate U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan calls some criticism of Trump’s immigration ban ‘hyperbole, lies’

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C. 4th District) released a statement Monday morning regarding President Donald Trump’s executive order that indefinitely suspends the United States’ Syrian refugee program and temporarily blocks immigration from seven countries with predominately Muslim populations:

Washington, D.C. — Rep. Trey Gowdy (SC-04) issued a statement following President Trump’s executive orders on extreme vetting:

“Our nation has a long and rich history of welcoming those fleeing persecution. We also have a long and rich history of liberating those suffering under oppression. We are the most welcoming and generous country in the world, and we are a country of immigrants.

The world we find ourselves in is dangerous and becoming increasingly so. Since national security and public safety are the preeminent functions of government, there is a fundamental duty to ensure the necessary background investigations can be done to stop anyone intent on doing harm from exploiting Americans’ generosity and taking more innocent lives.

American people deserve border and interior security. They deserve to know who is coming to our country, for what purpose, and for how long. They deserve to be assured those seeking entry into the country – regardless of the length of stay – have been vetted thoroughly and do not represent a security risk.

I am committed to doing everything we can to keep Americans safe just as I am committed to defending religious liberty and providing refuge to those fleeing persecution.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C. 3rd District), and Mark Sanford (R-S.C. 1st District) have also released statements on President Trump’s executive order.

  1. This says absolutely nothing. It is completely unclear if he supports Trump’s EO or not. He could use the exact same words and be supporting Obama’s policies on immigration. Mr Gowdy is a coward. SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND OWN IT. YOU ARE HIRED TO HAVE AN OPINION.

    1. This is not the full transcript. Youtube it.. this is just the lead in to saying there is no assurance for safety; therefore it should not happen.

  2. Once again Rep. Gowdy responds with class and dignity. If this old world was fair Representative Trump would be commenting on the action of President Gowdy. But alas and alack, it is not to be ( for now, anyway ).

  3. i am so proud of Trey Gowdy and glad that’s he is fighting the good fight in the House for America. He has a wonderful talent and thankful that he is with us. You can hear a pin drop when he speaks!

  4. I think a more accurate statement from Mr. Gawdy would be “we welcome all those who are fleeing persecution and death that are white, educated and CHRISTIAN.” Maybe he should spend more time educating himself on our vetting process and less time wasting our money on witch hunts (Benghazi).

  5. Representative Gowdy,
Thank you for standing with the President.
I wrote Senator Graham to tell him exactly how I feel about his self serving attitude of getting in front of the press and patting himself on the back for helping one Clemson grad as he forgets his commitment to his constituents who voted him into office. His undermining press conference which follow the usual old guard Republican tactic of back flipping at the first sign of protest do not sit well with the majority of us on immigration reform. One person’s inconvenience does not mean we should abandon the important work of vetting immigrants.
Thank you for being strong and not wavering in your commitment to you constituents.
I will write letters, spend hours on social media and work tirelessly as will many like minded South Carolinians to see you in office representing our vision for this great country.

Please stand strong even as Senator Graham folds. South Carolina is watching! You give me hope for this country!

  7. I think that Mr. Gowdy explained President Trump’s temporary ban in the most obvious logical way for those who still don’t get why it is so important for us as Americans to be safe and for the President to ensure our safety! All bets where off on September 11, 2001 even before that to be accurate with the bombing of the World Trade Towers in ’93 and countless other attacks but now we have a President that puts us American citizens first and it’s about time!!!

  8. Trey Gowdy is an absolutely brilliant orator, litigator and relentless seeker after the truth. I could honestly listen to him speak all day, and it’s an absolute treat to see him go after corrupt politicians. I am a British Citizen living in New Zealand.

  9. Thank you Rep. Gowdy can’t begin tell you how many times I have waited for your comments on extremely important issues, just such as this. Your words have not ever failed in expression of what is right and just.

  10. Rather mealy mouthed for the Trey Gowdy I’ve come to respect. How does he think that this blanket ban, based on populist prejudice will help the security of the US?

    1. ERIC JEFFRIES You come across as a poor loser and a cry baby…wonder where you were when the last FIVE PRESIDENTS issued bans against immigrants… ” According to the report, here are the number of times each president, since Reagan, has limited immigration to specific groups of people:
      Ronald Reagan – Five times
      George H. W Bush – One time
      Bill Clinton – 12 times
George W. Bush – Six times
      Barack Obama – 19 times
Not included in the CRS report is that Hillary Clinton’s State Department, without a presidential action, suspended all refugee applications from Iraq for six months in 2011.
ABC News reported, on the de facto ban of Iraqis in 2013:
As a result of the Kentucky case, the State Department stopped processing Iraq refugees for six months in 2011, federal officials told ABC News – even for many who had heroically helped U.S. forces as interpreters and intelligence assets. One Iraqi who had aided American troops was assassinated before his refugee application could be processed, because of the immigration delays, two U.S. officials said. In 2011, fewer than 10,000 Iraqis were resettled as refugees in the U.S., half the number from the year before, State Department statistics show.

  11. Rep. Gowdy Sir! I’m giving you my email address so I might ask you a few questions on getting some things done here in my State of Washington! I won’t go into it here because I would just as soon keep it between you and myself Sir! I have great respect for you Sir and even if I could go to someone in my state I would just as soon ask you! Thank you for the consideration!!!!

  12. I live out west and I am an independent who voted for a third party presidential candidate. I’m intelligent enough to know that I will never see eye to eye with any political party or politician on every issue. Though I lean to the left on most issues (e.g. indigenous rights, women’s rights, environment) I really enjoy watching and listening to videos of Trey Gowdy in action. He impresses me as being highly intelligent, very honest and an extremely articulate orator, even if I don’t agree with him on every issue. But when it comes to immigration, I disagree with liberals who think that the U.S. should have open borders and let just anyone come here. There are seven and a half billion people on this planet. Enough is enough! And I don’t know of any other country with totally open borders.

  13. Get the email criminal felon hillary, and the pedophile she is married to, obama, feinstein, reid, the LaVoy Finicums’ murders, etc…

    GO GOWDY, GO TRUMP!
