Greenville Health System Eye Institute to open Friday

Greenville Health System Eye Institute has announced it will open a new practice in Spartanburg County on Friday.

The office is at 333 S. Pine St. in the former Spartanburg headquarters library building near the Converse Heights neighborhood.

It will include a full-service retail optical shop, including prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses.

“We’re excited to extend our services to Spartanburg and look forward to meeting the various needs of our patients,” said Alan Leahey, chief of ophthalmology for GHS. “The GHS Eye Institute provides the latest eye surgeries and we pride ourselves on helping patients review their options.”

GHS will host a grand opening event from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the office. Local residents can take advantage of free glaucoma and dry eye screenings.

Registration is required and can be made via phone at 1-877-447-4636, or web at

The health system said its Eye Institute physicians specialize in general ophthalmology, cornea and refractive surgery, dry eye, cataract surgery, glaucoma management, diabetic eye exams, low vision therapy, pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics and contact lenses.

The institute has four ophthamologists and one optometrist. A fifth opthamologist will join the institute in June to oversee the Spartanburg location, which will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
