UPDATED (5/13/16 1:38 PM): The Southside High shooting was an accidental shooting. The victim was the one in possession of the gun.

A Southside High student was shot in the school cafeteria Friday morning, the school district has confirmed.

The student has been transported to the hospital by EMS. School district spokeswoman Beth Brotherton said the student is conscious and talking.

Law enforcement and school Superintendent Burke Royster is on scene.

The school is on lockdown and law enforcement has set up a perimeter around the school and parents will not be allowed inside that perimeter, Brotherton said. The school district will announce when students can be picked up as soon as possible.
